Six Ways to be Sincere (Includes Video)

A viewer on my YouTube channel recently asked how to be sincere. Good question! In this post, you’ll learn six ways to be sincere.

  1. Be genuine. That means that you say what you mean and mean what you say without being nasty to the other person.
  2. Always speak the truth, but that doesn’t mean insulting others or being condescending toward them. Realize that being sincere can also mean being vulnerable and possibly opening yourself up to being hurt.
  3. Be the same person on the outside that you are on the inside. Remember that your behavior when you think no one is watching is a pretty good indicator of who you really are.
  4. Do good without expectation of reward or even acknowledgment.
  5. Sincerity comes from the heart. It is motivated by a desire to help others and lift them up, not out of competition or arrogance.
  6. Watch out for automatic responses, especially to others’ pain. I once observed someone go into automatic compassion mode in response to hearing of a stranger’s grief. Her intention was honorable, but it just made the other person feel awkward and uncomfortable. Remember, sometimes the most sincere response is to just listen.

Being sincere is being real, yet also remembering to sometimes be quiet. I often quote my friend Meryl Runion from her book Power Phrases in which she said, “Say what you mean, mean what you say, and don’t be mean when you say it.” That’s sincerity in a nutshell.
